Imposter Syndrome Is Not a Sign You Are Failing — It Is a Sign You Are Growing

You are in a room, a role, or a moment that feels slightly too big for you. You know more than you did. You have earned your place here. And yet the persistent background thought that you do not fully belong, that you will eventually be found out, that the people around you are more capable than they appear — it does not go away. You are not alone. Most high functioning people carry this. And it almost always means you are doing something right.

The Real Reason You Are Facing This

Imposter syndrome is most commonly experienced by people who are genuinely growing into new levels of competence and responsibility — and who have enough self awareness to know they do not yet fully know what they need to know. People who actually lack competence rarely experience it; they are too unaware of the gap.

The feeling of being slightly out of your depth is not a sign that you do not belong. It is the feeling of learning. Internalising that reframe changes what the feeling means and therefore changes what you do with it.

Your Quick Fix Action Plan

  • Step 1: Keep an evidence file — a running list of things you have done well, problems you have solved, situations you have handled. Imposter syndrome thrives on selective memory. Counter it with a factual record it cannot dismiss.
  • Step 2: Talk about it. Imposter syndrome is almost universally common and almost universally unspoken. When you voice it to someone you trust, you will almost always find it is mutual — and that shared acknowledgement significantly reduces its power.
  • Step 3: Reframe the feeling as orientation. You are supposed to feel slightly out of your depth when you are developing. That feeling is accurate — it is telling you that you are in growth territory. Follow it rather than running from it.

The Long Game

The people who build remarkable things almost universally describe feeling unqualified at some point during the building. They built anyway. That is the only distinction between them and everyone else who felt the same thing.

Feel it. Do it anyway. That is the whole prescription.
